Nick, as we discussed, I think that they didn't try to bargain too much because they were at the mercy of the salesmen. They had to go and fast, and the only way to leave was on a cheap truck. Al will be in the story now as Tom's brother and if you've ever seen the Beverly Hillbillies, you can get a visual of how they all fit!
Sarah, you are welcome!
Shell, not so much that cars were cheap, but the salesmen were ripping off those who were trying to buy a car to get to California. Imagine selling 2 of your best horses (mules) and still owing money on a piece of junk truck that probably wouldn't get you out of the state of wyoming! The salesmen knew how to make a quick buck, and that is exactly what they did, at the expense of families like the joads.
Kayla, the salesman is indeed an annoying man. He is out to make a buck and that is about it. He specializes in ripping people off! Your questions about chapter 8 remain to be answered. What do you think will happen?
Jon, glad you picked up on the term jalopy. The salesman was willing to do anything to make a buck. He really cheated the farmer out of his mules. That was so sad to me.
