I realized something amazing. The fat guy at the gas station says " I jus don't know what the country's comin' to." This must be the thing people thought most. Even now some people say that. And it also represents the humans helplessness. We all do not know what is going to happen to us. It is the biggest fear of human or maybe if we knew it would be worse. I do not know :((

Excellent insight! Yes, I do think that is what a lot of people said at the time. Their faith in their country and government was shaken to the roots. How could this have happened to an entire nation? But also, keep in mind the reaction of Mr. Joad. He was very frustrated because the gas station owner had the attitude of just standing around and complaining about it instead of trying to make it better. It is a very helpless feeling to not know the future sometimes, but like you said, would we really want to?
